There aren't many artistes who burst onto the charts, establish themselves and still manage to keep the fire burning years later. Especially not in a place as fast-paced as Nigeria’s music industry. One of the few artistes to do so is Asake whose breakout story in 2022 through his “Omo Ope” hit is as impressive as his continuous run.
A few months ago, Asake alongside evergreen artiste, Wizkid teased a joint collaboration which left people in a state of anticipation, curiosity, and doubt mixed together. Then, they delivered ‘REAL, Vol. 1’, Asake’s first project in nearly two years and also his first major joint body of work. The EP went on to debut at No. 1 on the Official Top 100 Albums chart, recording the biggest opening week of the year by amassing 25.72 million on-demand streams. During its release week, all four tracks charted in top five on the Official Nigeria Top 100 chart (”Jogodo”, “Turbulence”, “Alaye”, and “Iskolodo” all landed in Top Five, occupying No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 respectively).
‘REAL, Vol. 1’ went ahead to spend ten consecutive weeks at No. 1 before slipping to No. 2 in its eleventh week and now records a grand total of 101 million on-demand streams.
“Jogodo” went on to spend nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Official Nigeria Top 100 chart before it was usurped by Asake’s latest release, “WORSHIP” featuring French DJ, DJ Snake which debuted at No. 1 and has since spent three consecutive weeks in that spot.
This performance has affected his discography in many ways. Prior to the presence of ‘REAL, Vol. 1’, Asake’s earlier projects, ‘Mr. Money With The Vibe’ (2022), ‘Work of Art’ (2023), and ‘Lungu Boy’ (2024) were sitting within the Top Ten on the Official Top 100 Albums chart. And after its release? ‘Work of Art’ skyrocketed to No. 2 while ‘Mr. Money With The Vibe’ to No. 4, marking their highest peak in the last two years—and both have since not departed the Top Ten all year long.
As it stands, all of Asake’s studio projects (4) occupy the Top Ten positions on the Official Top 100 Albums chart. On the Official Nigeria Top 100 chart, 2 songs are within Top 2 and 4 songs in Top 20 (that is, 7 songs overall on the Official Nigeria Top 100 chart). Additionally, Asake has 16 record entries from his discography on the streaming chart and seven on the radio chart.
