BIO:
The artist hails from South East London, raised between Kennington and Vauxhall in her early years. Of Jamaican and English heritage, she’d been around music since childhood; one of the youngest of a family of seven siblings, she’d soak up the funky house, old-school R&B and reggae that drifted through her home on Sunday afternoons. She’d displayed an untapped knack for music selection even then, further crystallized by way of a childhood nickname: DJ Skyla. Her current career would find her at the age of 21. Whilst in lockdown craving recreation, she’d been spurned on by her childhood nickname that would prove prophetic. She began attending the London DJ Academy to hone her skills, playing to listeners on socials spinning a mix of hip hop, afrobeats, funky house and more. But the sounds she now considers her musical home would find her whilst travelling with her sister, with the artist having her first taste of amapiano whilst visiting Wizkid’s recording camp in Ghana. She’d be mentored by the likes of DJ Tunez, teaching her how to DJ, mix, and pick out song selections, as well as honed by other figures like Maphorisa, Uncle Vinny and Major League DJz. In the end, what would set Skyla apart would be her infectious personality, and a love for engagement that would help the crowds fall in love. Encouraged by her sister and now manager, her breakthrough moment came by way of an opening slot on Wizkid’s Made in Lagos tour in 2021. Still an early career DJ at the time, it was a moment she can only describe as “trial by fire,” particularly compounded with her presence as a woman in a male-dominated scene. And years on from those early career moments, her words would ring true. Skyla’s artistry now sees her as an international DJ and performer. She has graced stages across the UK, US, Africa and Australia, performing at leading festivals such as Afronation, Wireless, Piano People and Australia’s Promiseland. The artist has sold out headline shows across London, Nigeria and Ghana, this in turn accompanied with a plethora of co-signs across the industry; artists such as Skepta, Central Cee, Rema, Wizkid, Tems, Ayra Starr and Rihanna have all shared support for her talent, with the latter artist personally selecting Skyla to open for her in Los Angeles and DJ at the London leg of her Fenty x Puma event launch. She has seen further support from BBC, Guap, Mixmag, Deeds Magazine, Pause Magazine and featured as a New Order Magazine cover star.
