On the second episode of TurnTable's "Producer on Producer," hitmakers Ozedikus and Jaysynths pull back the curtain on a curious industry phenomenon: how some of the biggest records are born from unexpected detours, spontaneous sessions, and relentless artistic vision. With over ten chart-topping songs between them, the two maestros explore the unpredictable journey from a beat to a hit.
Ozedikus unveils the serendipitous origin of Oxlade's "Kulosa," a track that has amassed over 600 million streams globally. Originally crafted with Wizkid in mind, the beat found its destiny during a time-pressed session with Oxlade. "I was only able to play him just one beat," Ozedikus recalls. Within 40 minutes, Oxlade had laid down his vocals. The next communication Ozedikus received was the surprising news that the global platform COLORS wanted to feature the raw, unmixed version. "This is the second time it is happening," Ozedikus notes, drawing a parallel to the release of Rema's "Dumebi," which also began as a reference track he'd created for another artist. Despite initial reservations about the unfinished sound, the organic quality of the COLORS performance resonated with millions, cementing "Kulosa" as a cornerstone of modern Afropop.
The theme of destined hits continues as Jaysynths recounts the creation of the viral sensation "Ojapiano." The story begins with a call from Skibii to collaborate with Kcee, a reunion a decade in the making; their last joint effort was the 2013 smash "Limpopo." Kcee laid down a direct challenge: "This is my 10th year of Limpopo, omo, you will give me another hit o." Jaysynths' confident response, "That's why we're here," set the stage for magic.
While the initial session yielded "Dum Dum," Kcee's true vision was still to come. He later pitched Jaysynths a novel idea: fusing the traditional Igbo flute ("Oja") with Amapiano. Translating this concept into sound proved frustrating. "Jaysynths listed out the frustrations trying to bring the vision to life," but with Kcee persistently on his heels, he finally crafted a one-minute loop that captured the perfect blend. The immediate positive feedback upon its release confirmed they had another era-defining hit on their hands.
Beyond these hit stories, the two producers share their personal projects and perspectives on the new talents shaping the industry's future, offering a well-rounded look at the life of a producer in constant evolution.
